Killeshandra designated ‘Angling Centre of Excellence’

Following the launch of The Irish Tourism Angling Strategy in 2007 which was developed by Failte Ireland and the Central and Regional Fisheries Board, work has been undertaken with the sector to identify and establish a number of  pilot ‘Angling Hubs’ nationally.

In the second phase of this strategy, the emphasis will be on establishing a number of ‘Anglers Welcome’ hubs around the country. Killeshandra has been identified as the first such pilot for the North West Region.

The aim of the Killeshandra ‘Anglers Welcome’ project is to work with local operators and tourism interests to realise the full potential of the area as an angling centre offering the full angling holiday experience.

This has since resulted in Failte Ireland holding two workshops to cover Customer Care and Marketing initiatives for local people. On Monday 25th May The Angling Hub held it’s first meeting when a number of subjects were discussed regarding the project. Initially it was thought that the overall plan could take about 3 years to be realised but projects would start almost immediately which would focus on providing holiday packages to include such things as nature walks, canoeing, fishing guides, boat and engine hire, tennis, crazy golf, wildlife excursions, golf, pitch n putt, equestrian events. Access to lakes was also discussed and 5 lakes would be targetted initially with the potential to include other lakes in the future.
